We picked up our bento boxes from a kiosk at the train station and caught an early train to Kyoto. They are very common, looked better than they tasted -- but it still was fun to do. After dropping off our bags, we wandered around the city. Nishiki Market was the perfect place to start. This 400 year old market has so many different food options. Tempura omelet might be my new favorite thing. So good. We also picked up a new knife - something Brian has been wanting to do forever. Unfortunately, we didn’t have good luck with dinner. It was freezing and cold rain, so we were on the hunt for ramen to warm us up. The couple of places we had noted were closed but we eventually found one. The bad news, it was not traditional ramen. The good news, is it was spicy and delicious, and something we’ll probably never get to try again. It was a Muslim ramen shop. Delicious -- just not what we were searching for. Between the little dark alleys we had to go through to find it and the language, it was a Lost in Translation moment. But what a gorgeous city. We love Kyoto.
