Halloween Parade

I hate to sound like a downer, but even after all this time, I really miss Oak Park on Halloween. It was always such a big deal and SO MUCH FUN. Parties in the classrooms (and parents were invited). A fun (outside) costume parade, where many of the adults even dressed up, political innuendos were had, and you might even see some fake blood. After that was done, it was time for trick-or-treating. In the dark. In a community where most everyone was way into to it. Sure, the sugar-rushed children stayed up a bit too late and were tired the next morning for school, but so what. It was really something to look forward too. And I still just can't quite get into it here.

As mentioned, trick-or-treating was Sunday, from 1-4pm. We had one group of five kids show up at our door. That was it. Why? Because everyone basically goes up and down one street. I have no idea how this started or why, but yuck. And the school parade, while very cute, is not very entertaining. The kids circle around the school a couple times, and go home. They have a little celebration before the parade, but parents are not invited so we don't disrupt the class schedule. Boring. After the parade, we picked H up at his school (no celebrations at all in middle school anymore...), then went to tae kwon do. Didn't even really feel like Halloween. That being said, the other kids at school don't know what they are missing since this is all they know. C did have a fun day, and sure was a very cute little Luke Skywalker.
