June was a doozy of a month, but we were finally able to get away. Brian and I took Van the dog on his first adventure. Besides jumping on the bed instead of his crate one time and giving me a big, fat lip -- on the first day none the less -- he did really great. He's such a good boy. Our first stop was Mount Bohemia. We were hoping to hike a bit and take advantage of the Nordic Spa, but oh my gosh, the mosquitos were insane! Within 5 minutes, Van had bites all over his body. We were getting eaten alive too. We decided to head to our campsite at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park instead. Brian knew the site was near a fort, but we had no idea how great it actually would be. It is a restored 1844 army military outpost. Every single building was open and set up to resemble the era. Supposedly it's typically staffed by people who portray Army life during it's time as an active post. We didn't get to see that, but it was really impressive. That evening, we cooked then ate inside since it was raining. What is so cool about this campsite, it is a central hub for some of the best mountain biking in the midwest. While it wasn't as busy as I imagine it would have been if the weather was better, the people who were there were still out and about. Michigan State Parks always have really have great, well-taken care of facilities. That state really knows how to do it right.
