The day was filled with on and off rain again, but also lots of Up North adventures. And Penny's birthday! So fun getting to celebrate with her. We made breakfast at home, then went to Seven Embers Coffee where we met up with Amy & Graham. The purpose for our trip was for a celebration of life for her mother, Carol, who passed away earlier this year. We were able to go to the cemetery with Amy & Graham & Sophie where Amy said a beautiful eulogy for her mother. Afterwards, we went to Infield to toast Carol with her favorite cocktail, a whiskey highball. When we walked in, imagine how surprised we were to see some friends from Milwaukee who were on their annual motorcycle trip -- one that Brian used to go on every year. So fun bumping into them.

We had dinner reservations that night, but decided we'd rather cook at home, so we stopped at a grocery store on the way back and were pleasantly surprised to find gorgeous tomahawk steaks! Such a treat for a birthday celebration. We came back to the house, kayaked a bit, Brian fished, and we built a beautiful fire in the massive fire pit before cooking a most incredible birthday dinner. Amy, Graham and Sophie stopped by to celebrate Penny a bit, then the boys sat by the fire while the girls watched Dirty Dancing. The perfect end to a special day.

Last Friday, we drove to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan -- lovingly referred to as the UP. It's a gorgeous area. We met up with Mel & Leif, and Penny & Chris at the house we rented for a few days. It was filled with taxidermy and loungers. It even had a Christmas tree -- and was extremely comfortable for the group of us. To get to the house, we traveled down a remote dirt road that was off the beaten path from any GPS mapping for a couple of miles (thank goodness for good written directions from the host) before we came upon the cabin. It was on a huge plot of land, and overlooked one of the lakes on the Fortune chain of lakes. We had kayaks, canoes and even a row boat available for use. Too bad it rained most of the weekend, but we were still able to enjoy most of it. The first night we stayed in and had brats and sipped Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream Liqueur from measuring cups while watching the World Cup and just enjoying each other's company. Mel had flown in from New York City that morning (talk about going from one world to the next), and Brian had gotten in late the night before from a work trip in Nashville. Needless to say, we were all exhausted. But also happy to be there. It really is a special place.

We just got back from a fantastic weekend in St. Louis visiting Hudson. It always goes by way too quickly — that’s for sure. Brian and I drove in Friday afternoon, stopped at our favorite store, AO&Co, on the way, and then checked into our Airbnb. We weren’t sure of Hudson’s schedule, so we booked it last minute. It was a new host and a new listing, which felt like a bit of a gamble — but it was absolutely perfect. Probably our favorite rental yet. Really comfortable and cute, and in a great area. Hudson met us at the house, and we had a little time before meeting Natalie for dinner, so we wandered the neighborhood and stumbled upon a storefront called Analog that had a real photobooth! They also had a digital one in the basement, but finding the old chemical ones is such a treat. The three of us squeezed in and took three different strips — never mind the one with the two blank shots. We didn’t realize it started immediately when you tapped your credit card, which was kind of hilarious. Afterward, we met Natalie at Basso for dinner, which was absolutely delicious. We called it a night pretty early. Brian was on fumes after a busy work week, and Hudson had just completed his first observation flight that day — so exciting.

The next morning, Hudson came over and we walked to the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market, which was more crowded than I’ve ever seen it. On the way back, Brian and Hudson stopped at Amsterdam Tavern to catch the end of a soccer match. It was only a couple of blocks from our place, so I opted out and met up with them later. We decided to wander around The Hill and stumbled upon the chubbiest dog I’ve ever seen. It was actually kind of sad — but also, how cute was he sticking his little nose out? Poor guy. Next, we stopped by Milo’s Bocce Garden for a snack. Hudson and Natalie are regulars, and we had to try the pizza, complete with St. Louis’s famous Provel cheese. I’m so fascinated by it — and it’s growing on me. In small doses, at least. It was such a fun day just wandering around. That evening, we met up with Natalie (who had worked all day), her mom, and her boyfriend. This was the second time we’d hung out with them, and I knew we were in for a good time. They’re just so easy to be around. They made reservations at The Gin Room, which was such a treat. They’re family friends of Edward’s and took great care of us. Natasha is a gin expert — she literally travels the globe as a gin judge and hosts tastings — and the cocktails were out of this world. And the food! Persian and absolutely delicious. Next, we walked a few steps to their other establishment, Monstera Mezcaleria, run by Natasha’s husband. A mezcaleria and wine bar, of course. The interior was incredible, and the speakeasy behind the bookshelf was such a fun surprise. What a cool family. But the night wasn’t over yet. We had one more stop: Venice Cafe. I’ve never seen anything like it. The entire place is covered in mosaic tiles and wild installations created by the owner himself. Even the bathroom was decked out — I almost wasn’t sure I was allowed to use it. Our St. Louis tour guides really outdid themselves. It was such a blast.

After not nearly enough sleep, it was time to check out. Thankfully, we were able to meet Hudson and Natalie one last time for breakfast before hitting the road. What a great weekend.

We had an incredible time in Minneapolis last weekend. We haven't been back since soccer season, and it was really nice just to have a weekend without plans. Brian and I arrived Friday night, and had a slumber party at Cole's place. He lives in a really nice 1-bedroom this year, so contributed a nice air mattress when he first moved in. It was so fun! The first night, we wandered over to Electric Fetus, then went to Kramarczuk's Sausage Co. for cabbage rolls and pierogis. So good. The next morning we got coffee then meet Cole at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. It's free, and right down the street from him. We were absolutely blown away. What an incredible space. Later, we met Finn and Rosie at Brit's to watch the Man U soccer game. It's so good getting to see them -- and to top it off, Man U won. After a little relaxation, we went to dinner at Hai Hai. I have a huge list of Minneapolis restaurants to check off, and that was one of them. Sunday morning, we walked to The Copper Hen for breakfast before it was time for Brian and I to drive back. Such a great visit.
