Farmer's Market

The Farmer's Market has been open for a couple weeks now, but we made it over for the first time today. We ate donuts, listened to music, picked up some flowers and food. C discovered a great goat cheese, so I bought it. But we never got to eat it, since somewhere along the way, he lost it. Next time, it goes straight into my bag.

Last Day of School

It's official. Summer break is here! H went to school for a total of one hour today. I took the day off and spent the day with him. It was great. Tradition has it, that on the last day of each school year, the teachers do a dance. It was fun. I hung out on the play lot and drank coffee with other parents, then after school was officially out, H and I went to the bead store for beads for H's necklace (that's what C did on a recent Dad-C day too). Then we took the train downtown and met Brian for lunch at the new super-duper Whole Foods right by his work. It's pretty crazy. Good stuff. We came back, made a stop at the conservatory, then picked C up early. Early evening was the school party in the park. But I don't have pictures of that. We were too busy making sure the kids were within site. Now, it's time for a little (late) dinner, movie and bed. It was a great year, and now, I can't wait for summer.

Candied Popcorn

If you like feeding your kids lots of sugar, this is a perfect snack for you. Seriously, 6 cups of sugar! But since it's the end of the school year, I caved in. It's sweet. The kids loved it, and actually, it's not something you can eat a lot of so it's really not too bad (yes it is, oh well). The recipe suggests food coloring -- which I didn't add. Next time (did I just say that?), I will. Most of the color fades when it bakes. H likes the strawberry (red) best and doesn't like the lime. C likes the lime (green) best and doesn't like the strawberry. Of course. (Recipe found on Conversations with a Cupcake).

Teacher Gift

Friday is the last day of school. Tomorrow H will be giving his teacher this gift we made. Well, I made -- he picked out the flower and planted it. It's painted with chalkboard paint, and was very easy to make, but turned out very cute. I hope she likes it. He had a great 1st grade year ... for sure.

Broken

When I picked C up from child care tonight, here's what he had to say about his day:

C. Mom, me have bad day.

Me. Why?

C. Someone fell on me and my lip bleed.

Me. I heard.

C. And me tell on E and S (his girlfriends). Why? They laughing at me.

Me. Oh no.

C. Yeah, me tell teacher, E and S, they breaking my heart. (sigh) That's why.

20th Anniversary

C's school -- the one H graduated from last year -- celebrated it's 20th anniversary this weekend. Today was the big block party, and it was a blast. There were bouncy houses, an ice-cream stand, gourmet coffee, popcorn, bands and even a balloon guy. The boys also got to ride in the front of a fire truck. It was amazing.

Celebrating Grandpa

Friday was my grandfather's memorial service in Wisconsin. He was 82, had a good life and was very active until the end. It was nice having a day of remembrance, and hearing the stories from family, friends and even people who worked for him years ago. He knew how to talk to anyone and have a good time. We rode his prized Cadillac to the service and the kids balanced spoons on their noses -- one of his not-so-hidden talents. We ended with a fish fry down the road from his house. It was a good day, celebrating a man who will be missed.

Something Smells Funny

I'm not even going to get into the story, but let's just say, we are having sewer issues. One that resulted in a flooded basement and a 1:00 am sewer rooting call a couple nights ago, as well as concern of a more serious problem. We had another plumbing company out today for a second opinion. Good news is, it probably isn't as bad as we thought -- however, they are still recommending a major sewer project to be done on our home. Total bummer. But I did manage to get a good laugh by their truck though (see above). Now, that's some funny sh*t.

Awards

(Daffodil by H)

Yesterday was an award ceremony for 1st grade at H's school. Here's the certificates he came home with:

Good Character || Community, spirit & outstanding participation
Outstanding Citizenship || Always on task, follows directions, respectful and responsible
500 Club Scrolls || I'm still not sure what this is
Worm Club || His morning reading group

From my understanding, most of the kids get these awards. But he was, nonetheless, very pleased ... as he should be.

The World According to C

C got a hold of my camera the other night. Besides the self portrait, here are some of the pictures he captured.

Homemade Bread ... Yum

Over the years, Brian's tested out several bread recipes. All have been good, but he's determined to master the perfect bread -- kind of like my new quest for homemade pasta. After a conversation and demo from our French friends (and incredible bread makers) who live down the street over the weekend, he produced several amazing loaves late last night. I'm actually not a huge bread eater, but nothing beats bread from scratch, and I can't stop eating it. So good.

Summary Of Our Weekend

A self-portrait by C ... H and Storm crashed on the sofa. It sure was fun. Exhausting, but fun.
